George Henry Kimm, Hairdresser and Tobacconist

George Henry Kimm

On the left is George Henry Kimm (1890-1973) son of Luk ah Kimm (c1837-1905) and Wilhelmina King (1858-1939) and great uncle of my partner Wayne. He was born in Richmond, was a hairdresser in 1912 in Balaclava, then by 1913 he was in Swan Hill. The photo comes from the family of his son George (also a hairdresser) born in 1919. They couldn’t tell me any more about the photo.

How old would George be? Who are the other people? The shop looks well established-in his 30s perhaps so possibly late 1920s, or 1930s. We don’t know why he went to Swan Hill. His older brother appeared to take over their father’s market garden business in Kyneton. I did find George was involved in greyhound racing. In 1916 he had a dog named Tonic Shampoo! The shop, renovated since this photo, is now located in the Swan Hill Pioneer Village.
